patchwork skirt tutorial

So I thought I'd try write up a little tutorial for the patchwork skirt I made for my daughter.

Supplies:
- fabric squares (I used 4 1/2" squares)
- fabric strip (for bottom ruffle)
- 3/4" elastic
- thread
- scissors/rotary cutter

* The skirt I made is approximately size 6-12 month.  To make a bigger skirt, add more fabric squares to the rows, add more rows, and make a longer strip for the bottom ruffle.

Cut out fabric.  I used 14 - 4 1/2" squares and one strip of fabric measuring 4" by the wide of fabric (42").

Lay out fabric squares how you want them on the skirt.
I used 6 squares for the top row (waistband row) and 8 for the middle.

Sew the squares together in a row using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
I also zig zagged the edges to prevent fraying.  Press.

Then sew the two ends together to form a circle.

Do the same for the second row of squares.

To create the waist band, fold the top of the skirt under 1/4 inch and press.
Fold down another 1 inch and press.

Stitch the waistband close to the edge leaving about a 1-inch opening to insert the elastic.

Increase your stitch length and baste along the top edge of the second row.

Gather the second row making it the same circumference as the first row.

Pin it to the first row.

Sew the two together using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.  Zig zag and press the seam up.
Top stitch along the bottom of the first row.

Sew the 4" x WOF strip of fabric together creating a circle.   To make the hem, fold the bottom edge under 1/2 inch and press.  Fold up another 1/2 inch, press again, and stitch.

Baste the top edge of the bottom ruffle and gather just as you did for the second row.  Pin to the second row and sew.  Zig zag the edge to prevent fraying.  Press the seam up and top stitch along the bottom of the second row.

Using a bodkin (I love this little tool) or safety pin, pull the elastic through the waistband overlapping the two ends.  (I used 16 inches of 3/4" elastic.)

Sew the ends together.  I used a zig zag stitch and stitched back and forth several times to make sure the elastic is held together tightly.  Tuck the sewn elastic into the waistband and finish sewing it closed.

And that's it... You have a cute patchwork skirt!

Clear as mud?! :) This is a quick skirt to make (although it may not seem like it with the amount of pictures I included). If you have any questions, let me know!
